Description
The Construction division of Hennepin County's Transportation department is seeking an Engineering Technician or Assistant Engineering Technician to work with the construction inspection crew with rotations to a survey crew and/or materials testing lab.The Assistant Engineering Technician will be provided an exposure to work with a municipal government and public works at a county-wide scale. Training and the opportunity to develop professionally through formal and informal training will be provided.
The list created from this posting will be used to fill a vacancy at either the Assistant Engineering Technician or the Engineering Technician level. Job class selection will be based on the education and experience of the applicant.
Engineering Technician, Assistant (Level I): $46,330.04 - $60,561.98 Annually
Engineering Technician (Level II): $58,516.84 - $69,767.50 Annually

For more information visit the employee referral program page.Location and hours:This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340, and remote as job duties require. There is no public transportation to the facility in Medina. During construction season, this position will work at various Hennepin County sites or in the office, and hybrid during the winter season as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., including occasional nights, weekends, and holidays with overtime. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022, to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

In these positions, you will:
For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I):
Assist in construction inspection, material testing, and construction survey activities.
Assist in construction staking and survey computations.
Perform or check basic quantity, alignment, mathematical, or geometric calculations for construction projects.
Read and interpret construction plans and technical specifications.
Observe construction activities for compliance to the project plans and specifications.
Perform quality control tests on construction materials.
Perform material testing in a lab setting on a variety of construction materials.
For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II - including the above duties):
Perform or check more complex quantity, alignment, mathematical, or geometric calculations for construction projects.
May act as chief inspector on simple road or bridge construction projects; act as lead inspector in any category of materials or construction inspection of complex projects
May direct, train, and check the work of technicians in lower level classifications.
Need to have:
For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I)
One of the following:
Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology or land surveying training program.
One or more years of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
One year of experience analyzing numerical data using computer software applications, or developing and maintaining computerized information system applications.
Thirty (30) college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science, or engineering related technical courses (or graduating in May of 2024 with an Associates or higher in one of the above fields).
A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Need to have:
For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II)
One of the following:
Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field.
Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2.
A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Nice to have:
Certification(s) from the MnDOT Technical Certification Program.
Experience:
Operating survey equipment such as total station, levels, and/or tripods.
Operating inspection and materials testing equipment such as air tester, proctors, and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP).
Using computer software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation.
Operating materials lab testing equipment.
Knowledge of:
Math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
Construction equipment, materials, and methods.
Ability to:
Communicate with staff at all levels of the organization.
Maintain neat and accurate records.
