Hennepin County Library (HCL) is seeking several Homework Help Lead Tutors who are passionate about serving youths and families to manage the delivery of the K-12 Homework Help afterschool tutoring program. Homework Help Lead Tutors are responsible for providing academic and social support to students, overseeing the day-to-day program activities, managing the program space and routines, and supporting volunteer tutors.HCL Homework Help is a drop-in tutoring program for youths in grades K – 12 to work with adult staff and volunteers on their homework assignments in a free, safe, and welcoming space after school. The focus of this program is to provide students with one-on-one and small group support in understanding and completing the learning tasks they have been assigned by their teachers at school. Most students who use this program are recent immigrants and may be likely to encounter cultural or language barriers as they work through their learning and development. The goals of the program are to support youth in:
Increasing their knowledge and mastery of academic concepts and skills.
Increasing their confidence in subject matter areas.
Increasing their abilities to do well in school.
***Pay starts at $23.00/ hour

Location and hours:
These positions will be located at several different locations. Lead tutors work approximately 8 - 12 hours per week during the afternoons and evenings throughout the school year. This position will pick up shifts as needed for the library locations listed below:
Brooklyn Park: Monday and Thursday 4:30pm – 7:30pm
East Lake: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 3:30pm – 7:30pm
Eden Prairie: Tuesday and Wednesday 5:30pm – 7:30pm
Plymouth: Monday and Tuesday 4:00pm – 7:00pm
Walker: Monday and Wednesday 3:00pm – 7:00pm
Southdale: Monday and Tuesday 4:30pm – 7:30pm
About these position types:
These are limited duration (temporary) part time, non-benefit earning position expected to last up to two years, with the possibility of extension.
These positions are internally classified as an Office Specialist III.

In these positions, you will:
Direct the daily operation of the afterschool tutoring program for K-12 students.
Support library community engagement and outreach of the Homework Help program.
Establish and communicate program routines and norms with students, volunteers, and families.
Provide orientation, coaching, and training to volunteer tutors.
Collect and report program data such as monthly attendance, participant surveys, and family engagement activities.
Become familiar with and promote library resources for supporting student homework to students, families, and volunteers.
Participate in required meetings and training sessions.
Need to have:
One of the following:
Two years or more of full-time equivalent office clerical experience.
Completion of two years or more of post-high school education.
18 months or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program.
One year or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Human Services Pathway Training program.
Note: Education may be substituted for experience on a month for month (3 semester credits = 1 month) basis.
Nice to have:
Experience
Leading a youth program or working with youth in volunteer setting.
Tutoring youth in subjects such as math, language arts, and science.
Working with Hennepin County programs, i.e. volunteering.
Ability to work with multiple audiences, including children, families, volunteers, and staff members with cultural backgrounds other than your own.
Familiarity with best practices in tutoring and academic skill building.
Strong knowledge in literacy and mathematical concepts, and familiarity with best practices in tutoring or academic skill building practices.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.
Candidates with fluency in Somali and Spanish in addition to English are encouraged to apply. Bilingual candidates who pass a language assessment may qualify for additional bilingual pay and duties.
