Description
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Division (ADD) is looking for two interns currently enrolled in an associate or bachelor's degree program. Interns should be interested in becoming familiar with a correctional environment and the unique needs of the inmate population. Interns may have the opportunity to work with ADD staff in Jail Programs, Classification, or Jail Intelligence. Interns will gain experience preforming some of the tasks in these areas as well as have supervised interactions with inmates. Interns will be exposed to the correctional process from security considerations, clerical functions, gathering intelligence, preparing information obtained, and the data privacy considerations related to the handling of intelligence. Location and hours: Job duties will be performed at the Hennepin County Adult Detention Division located at 401 South. 4th Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55415. Interns must be available to work during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Interns will work between 20-35 hours per week. These internships will start in June and end in August with the potential to extend. Note: You must attach a resume with your application materials in order to be considered for these positions. The responsibilities of each position include but are not limited to the following: Classification and Jail Intelligence The Adult Detention Center Classification Unit is charged with determining inmate housing assignments based on several factors including medical and mental health considerations. Classification staff also administer the ADD’s inmate disciplinary process including holding disciplinary hearings and determining sanctions. The Adult Detention Center Jail intelligence component focuses on identifying security threat groups along with general security threats to the facility and working with the Criminal Information Sharing & Analysis (CISA) Unit to identify violent crime trends. The intern will be responsible for the following tasks:
· Data entry/statistical tracking.
· Assist with planning and setting up for special details (Operation Jail House Rock).
· Assist with preparing slides information for Metro Area Jail Intelligence Collaboration.
· Preparing internal jail intel products.
· Preparing documentation of Security Threat Group members/threats and trends for VOTF.
· Assist with Classification data migration into ATIMS system.
· Other projects as assigned.
· Assist Central Records with Photo Imaging and other duties as needed.
· Assist with monitoring inmate mail.
Jail Programs
Jail programs offers inmates recreational activities as well as in person volunteer lead programming.
The intern will be responsible for the following tasks:
· Preparing supply orders.
· Stocking inmates use recreational supplies/games.
· Assisting with book cart restocking.
· Assist with content development for HOPE educational programming.
· Research and propose potential grant funding for new HOPE initiatives.
· Research what other Minnesota Jails are offering for programming and recommend new inmate programming.
· Assist with establishing the HOPE Resource Center (Wrap Around Services) – Request for Proposal (RFP) Process/drafting SOP/Policy.
· Statistical tracking for inmate programming and inmate attendance to prepare monthly reporting.
· Other projects as assigned.
· Assist Central Records with Photo Imaging and other duties as needed.
Need to have:
· Enrollment in an associate or bachelor's degree program for the 2023-2024 academic school year in sociology, human services, cultural studies, anthropology, behavior sciences, law enforcement, social work, criminal justice, and/ or related fields.
· Access to reliable transportation.
Nice to have:
· Experience in a correctional setting or correctional based field work.
· Experience working with:
o Research projects.
o Confidential information.
· Understanding of correctional data and relative data privacy laws.
· Competence in various software programs including proficiency in Microsoft products or equivalent Google products.
· Ability to:
o Work independently.
o Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
o Be self-motivated and organized.
