Description
The Hennepin County Public Health Clinic is seeking a Laboratory Assistant with a strong interest and background working with a diverse patient base that includes underserved communities who experience marginalization, stigma, and disparities. This position will provide laboratory and clinical support services to clients and families of refugees, tuberculosis (TB), and STD/HIV conditions in the Public Health Clinic.
The Public Health Clinic is a respected leader in providing comprehensive testing and treatment for tuberculosis, refugee health exams, and sexual health services through the Red Door Clinic, Minnesota’s largest HIV and sexually transmitted infection clinic. Location and hours:
This position will be located at the Public Health Clinic at 525 Portland Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55415. Current clinic hours are primarily 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. This position will require working one evening shift when the clinic resumes evening hours on Mondays and Wednesdays until 7:30 p.m. No overnight or holiday shifts are required.

This position is subject to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Interim Final Rule on COVID-19 Health Care Staff Vaccination. As such, it requires the job offer to be conditional based on the candidate being fully vaccinated for COVID-19. “Fully vaccinated” means 14 days after receiving the second dose in a two-dose vaccination series approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on a full or emergency-use basis, or 14 days after receiving a single-dose vaccine approved by the FDA on a full or emergency-use basis. After a conditional job offer is made, the candidate must show proof of full vaccination prior to their start date. A COVID-19 vaccination card from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a vaccination record from your doctor’s office or a personal digital vaccination record constitutes sufficient “proof.” The candidate must also attest they are vaccinated by completing a form on the first day of employment. Reasonable accommodations to this vaccination requirement will be considered upon request by a candidate for medical or religious reasons as required by applicable law.
In this position, you will:
Room patients and explain the processes and procedures of collecting pharyngeal, rectal, or vaginal specimen.
Properly identify, label, process, package and distribute laboratory specimens.
Perform phlebotomy on patients based on provider orders.
Follow laboratory protocols on opening and closing the lab and staff lab when the Medical Laboratory Technician Specialist is not available.
Maintain work area and supplies by stocking all examination rooms with appropriate and adequate supplies.
Comply with safety regulations and work rules in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
Teach specimen collection/specimen processing/client services processes and procedures to newly hired employees and students.
Register patients in Epic and input test data into Epic and Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) portal as needed.
Need to have:
One of the following:
Completion of an approved three-month course in clinical laboratory technique.
Completion of ten quarter credits or more of biology or chemistry college courses.
Six months or more of experience in a clinical laboratory setting.

Working in healthcare.
Working with diverse populations that may present with social vulnerabilities, stigmatization, or have a history of experiencing barriers to health care such as mental health, opioid addiction, poverty, unstable housing, etc.
Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures, terminology, and correct specimen collection procedure.
Ability to:
Exhibit sensitivity to the needs and issues of diverse and disenfranchised individuals.
Work independently and collaboratively with colleagues to provide quality care.
Walk and stand for long periods of time; navigate stairs, stoop, kneel and reach; carry equipment within the clinic.
