JOB TITLE: Laboratory Manager
DEPARTMENT: Lab
REPORTS TO: Reports to Laboratory Director
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
The laboratory manager will have direct responsibilities for the operations of the clinical and anatomic laboratory and all satellite clinic laboratory sites. Responsibilities will include procedure development; implementation, training, and ongoing updates; creation and maintenance of a personnel manual; training of personnel within the laboratory and all services. Oversees the routine and specialized procedures in the Histopathology Laboratory including preparation of histology material, cytology material, immunohistochemistry, and FISH material. Maintain and implement all LIS functions. Perform and coordinate all external lab testing. Hiring and maintaining laboratory staff members. Ensures compliance with all COLA, CLIA, and federal guidelines.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for all daily lab functions which include; performing and supervision of in-house lab specimens testing, daily lab draws.
Supervises the work of laboratory personnel engaged in specialized technical procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performance, and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems.
Prepare technical reports reflecting the volume of work, procedures utilized and test results; coordinate the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions
Development and implementation of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques; plan, develop and present training or workshops.
Available to assist with daily lab draws.
Direct and indirect supervision of in-house lab specimens testing.
Develop and implement quality control programs to ensure the reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment, and compliance with federal regulations; prepare and maintain applicable records.
Design appropriate work schedules for clinical lab staff and plan daily work assignments in order to maintain an adequate personnel complement for laboratory efficiency.
Assists Director of Clinic Operations with personnel functions including, but not limited to, interviewing, hiring, performance appraisals, and vacation schedules.
Monitor Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Safety Inspection Control practice to assure compliance with internal and external regulations.
Maintain sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain standard laboratory equipment with budgetary guidelines.
Utilize, maintain, implement and train all staff on using the LIS and various laboratory/hospital information systems and software.
Communicate in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family, staff, physicians, and other medical personnel as necessary to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, clarify orders and communicate status.
Coordinates and consults with the Director of Clinic Operations, Clinical Services Manager, Laboratory Director, and/or Laboratory Consultant regarding lab-related issues.
Coordinates and consults with Histotechnology Supervisor regarding Anatomical Lab-related issues.
Responsibility for the oversight of ancillary testing program including QC, QA, and development of policies and procedures.
Interprets accrediting agencies' standards or guidelines for ancillary testing programs and translates requirements into policies and procedures; initiates corrective action as soon as a deficiency is identified; completes checklists and other information sheets required and coordinates on-site inspections.
Provide advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, verification of specimen quality, and test results.
Works with Management Team to develop a budget for the laboratory and maintains control of lab costs.
Stay abreast of, and execute the latest laboratory testing and procedures.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS/ABILITIES TO EFFECTIVELY PERFORM RESPONSIBILITIES:
Represent Metro Urology, a division of Minnesota Urology in a professional manner related to appearance, communication, and the maintenance of patient confidentiality.
Incorporates the use of technology into day-to-day tasks by using Outlook, Microsoft Office Suite, EMR, and Orchard effectively and accurately.
Ability to effectively communicate and work efficiently with Laboratory Director, Clinical Consultant, Histotechnology Lead, administration, physicians, patients, and staff.
The ability to analyze work methods to effectively organize work makes improvements and corrects problems.
