Hennepin County Veterans' Service area within Health and Human Services is looking for a Veterans Service Representative (VSR) to join them in helping the veterans of Hennepin County. This area assists veterans, their dependents, and/or survivors in obtaining federal and state-funded financial and medical benefits.
Locations and hours:
This position is remote. Remote workers may be required to come on-site 0 to 12 days a year for work meetings, trainings, or for any other reasons that their supervisor may deem necessary (may include additional days for onboarding and new employee training). Supervisors will provide as much advance notice as practicable. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. This position will also visit homeless veterans at the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) medical centers, shelters, or community sites as needed. Based on business needs of this position, hires must live in or relocate to Minnesota.
In this position, you will:
Interview veterans and/or their families to recognize and assess their needs and select the most appropriate course of action to assist them.
Provide advocacy for veterans to obtain needed benefits and services.
Prepare case records/outcomes, social histories, correspondence, and other documentation using computer applications.
Assist returning Iraqi and Afghanistan veterans to obtain veterans benefits and participate in Combat Veteran Reintegration of Minnesota Troops.
Provide service at regional sites and the Hennepin County Adult Correctional Facility as part of Human Services and Public Health's Regionalization Plan.
Assist veterans that are experiencing homelessness and involved with veterans’ court.
Need to have:
One of the following:
Two years or more of work experience interpreting policies and procedures to the public.
Bachelor's degree or higher in behavioral science or closely related field.
Status as a veteran (served in active duty in the U.S. armed forces) as determined in Minnesota State Statute 197.447 (applicants must submit a copy of their DD214 which includes their character of service).
Must be a resident of Minnesota.
Nice to have:
Strong verbal and written communication skills using business correspondence format and style.
Strong organization and time management skills.
Experience:
Reviewing and determining client eligibility for either government financial assistance, health care programs, other non-governmental assistance such as loans, credit or private insurance, or related experience.
With services coordination experience including good interview skills, assessment skills and the ability to acquire these skills.
Using databases and computer applications to perform data entry where accuracy is essential.
Knowledge of state and federal financial veteran program for veteran benefits.
