MnCAN is a small but mighty nonprofit organization dedicated to serving people with aphasia,their families and communities through innovative programs that maximize communication competence, self-motivation, and confidence to re-engage in life. Our participants are encouraged to work with MnCAN staff in developing program ideas, advocacy efforts, and leadership opportunities. We have been supporting the aphasia community since 2014 and with the retirement of our Founding Executive Director, we are looking for a leader to take us to our next chapter in the services we offer to the aphasia community. We are seeking a visionary and compassionate leader looking to support a growing organization. Could that be you? Summary The Executive Director is appointed by, and reports directly to, the MnCAN Board of Directors. The position balances a big picture vision with practical “get-it-done” style. They will lead MnCAN’s team of two part-time employees (Program Coordinator, and Development and Communications Coordinator), a team of contract Speech Language Pathologists, and volunteers. www.mncan.org Responsibilities Leadership and Management Key focus: collaborating and communicating with the MnCAN board of directors, managing organization operations, and overseeing fiscal management · Lead the strategic planning process (development, review, and implementation) with the Board of Directors. Ensure, along with the Board of Directors, the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission. · Establish goals, objectives, and operational plans in collaboration with Board and staff members. · Implement Board approved budget policies and guidelines. Ensure MnCAN operates within guidelines and adequate funds are available to permit MnCAN to carry out its work. · Recruit, build and manage an effective team of staff and volunteers dedicated to fulfilling the mission. Ensure that job descriptions and/or contracts are developed and in place. Oversee training of MnCAN program tenants, principals and responsibilities conducted by the Program Coordinator. Fundraising and Communication Key focus: donor management, developing and executing fundraising opportunities, marketing, and community relations · Create and implement an annual Fundraising Plan, including grant support, scheduled fundraising campaigns, and oversight of the organization and implementation of annual fundraising event. · Build relationships with potential donors and manage major gift solicitations. · Enhance MnCAN’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other related professionals and organizations. · Lead staff responsible for communications/development strategies. Oversee the creation and distribution of digital and print marketing materials and communications (monthly newsletters, social media, brochures, flyers, aphasia cards, website maintenance, etc.). Planning and New Business Key focus: program planning, development, and evaluation/personnel · Determine program needs from interviews, research, surveys, and consultation with Program Coordinator. · Initiate and/or change programs that support MnCAN mission and vision in coordination with Program Coordinator. · Ensure new program presentation is consistent with MnCAN’s brand and image. · Oversee the development and implementation of program goals, and evaluation measures. · Monitor direct service programs managed by Program Coordinator to ensure adequate space, staffing levels, orientation of new staff, problem solving, and field observations. Oversee the prospective participant intake process and assignment to recommended programs as completed by Program Coordinator. Traits and Characteristics Desired Required Qualifications The Executive Director candidate will be thoroughly committed to MnCAN’s mission "to improve the life participation of individuals impacted by aphasia through comprehensive programs, education, peer connections and community support" and overall vision that "people with aphasia participate in life without barriers". Strengths in relationship-building and communication skills, as well as ability to navigate uncertainty and think with a big picture/strategic mindset is valued. The individual must be a collaborative problem-solver willing to seek advice when needed. Characteristics would include a combination of coach, visionary, and participative styles. The successful candidate would be considered a “doer” yet an excellent listener, willing to ask for and incorporate input from others. Finally, the ability to effectively delegate and prioritize time effectively is essential. Other required qualifications include: · Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience · Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning and problem solving · Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles such as those experienced in a growing organization · Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills; persuasive and passionate communicator · Past success working collaboratively with a diverse group of people (independent contractors, volunteers, board of directors, speech - language pathologist and mental health workers, physicians, related professionals, etc.) · Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Docs. Preferred Qualifications · Progressive leadership experience in the nonprofit field with successful fundraising, grant-seeking, donor management, and marketing experience. · Advanced degree in Speech Language Pathology or equivalent health care experience that developed a deep understanding of aphasia. · Experience with CANVA (or other graphic design software), Facebook/Instagram, donor management systems.
