We create spaces for neighbors to gather and call their own while building and sustaining our raving local fan base.
Blue Plate was formed in 1993 by David Burley and Stephanie Shimp with the opening of Highland Grill. Over the years Blue Plate has grown to include the Freehouse, the Lowry, Bottle Rocket, Mercury Dining Room & Rail, Shindig Event Center, 3 Squares Restaurant, Longfellow Grill, Edina Grill, Groveland Tap and The Blue Barn. Blue Plate is privately owned.
The Human Resource Manager is a highly visible role within the organization. This position will be managing the human resources function to create and build processes for a growing company in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment working with a diverse population. The Human Resource Manager will be responsible to support the organization’s overall business plan and objectives by providing guidance, systems and solutions in key HR areas including: recruitment, employee relations, training and career development, compliance, safety and compensation and benefits.
Create recruitment processes, templates and systems to assist restaurant management to effectively source, recruit, hire and retain quality employees.
Participate in the screening, interviewing, coordinating schedules and selection of candidates for key positions.
Develop, participate and manage recruitment sources including career and job fairs, networking events, employee referrals, cold calling, community partnership, Internet resources, social media and more.
Lead applicant tracking system maintenance and job board and recruitment vendor relationships.
Manage job offers, pre-employment requirements and consistency of disposition rationale.
Coordinate and conduct all activities related to onboarding, new hire orientation and new hire training.
Develop and maintain effective relationships with senior management and restaurant management teams.
Set standards for handling employee relations and corrective action processes.
Counsel managers and participate in handling employee relations issues consistently across the organization.
Keep executive management informed of pertinent employee relations issues.
Participate in and assist in the documentation of disciplinary action and other employee issues up to and including recommending the exit and termination of employees.
Lead exit interviews and work with executive team on trend analyzing reasons for separation.
Performance Management/Training & Development
Establish, document and communicate clear performance expectations and standards.
Evaluate, discuss and hold employees accountable for job performance and organizational behavior standards.
Create performance management systems, training and tools to integrate with organizational objectives and culture.
Hold management and employees accountable to HR policies and procedures.
Support senior management with new employee career development plans and paths.
Keep current and maintain compliance with federal and state employment regulations.
Identify legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting the HR function (e.g., OSHA, EEO, ERISA and FLSA).
Ensure that senior management is aware of regulation changes and organizational compliance timelines and needs.
Ensure that up-to-date ADA-compliance job descriptions are in place.
Lead unemployment claim determinations and represent organization during depositions.
Compensation and Benefits
Partner with senior management to develop competitive compensation and benefits programs.
Review benefits plans annually and meet with vendors to negotiate the most cost effective and comprehensive plan for the organization’s employees.
Manage Short-Term-Disability Claims and gate keep consistency of policy practices.
Coordinate open enrollment and related activities with accounting.
Establish compensation structure, system and tools as appropriate for organization, to ensure internal and external pay equity.
Lead quarterly safety meetings and overall work-place safety culture.
Partner with Insurance provider regarding workers compensation and general liability claims.
Facilitate return-to-work plans with management and provide guidance on accommodations.
Desired Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field required.
Five or more years of progressively responsible experience in a Human Resources Generalist role.
PHR or SPHR certification preferred.
Previous restaurant and/or food service experience a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and relationship building skills to effectively work with a diverse group/variety of people and personalities, including developing relationships with management team, vendors, customers and employees.
Strong leadership and management skills; able to lead employees; able to function well as part of the organization’s management team.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to proactively and professionally ensure the organization’s human resources needs are being met.
Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including overtime, nights and weekends as required to address the needs of employees in varying schedules, including attending events/meetings as needed.
Ability to be self-motivated and plan, prioritize, coordinate, and manage own work in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work unsupervised, make high level decisions independently, and solve problems effectively and creatively.
Ability to display high levels of customer service, responding promptly and thoroughly to the inquiries and needs of individuals both internal and external to the organization.
Ability to develop and give presentations to large and small groups of individuals inside and outside the organization.
Strong computer skills including Google Platforms and affiliated systems.
Actively participate in weekly executive leadership meeting and contribute with a business partner mentality.
