Sr. Merchandise Manager: United Hardware Distributing in Plymouth, MN is seeking a full-time Sr. Merchandise Manager for our Merchandising Department.

United Hardware Distributing Co. is a full-line wholesale hardware distributor providing products, retail programs and support services to independent retailers. Headquartered in Plymouth, MN, United Hardware services dealers from its 400,000 square foot distribution center in Milbank, SD and delivers to locations in 18 states.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Under direction and general guidelines set by the Director of Merchandising:

  • Partner with Category and Brand Marketing to develop and execute strategies defined by the Category Management Team to define product assortments and with Replenishment to establish efficient and cost-effective supply chain solutions and product sales.

  • Understand key business drivers, competitive landscape and retailer segmentation for assigned categories.

  • Review products to ensure accuracy and integrity of information provided to cross-functional resources and to our retailers.

  • Review and maintain products by analyzing historical sales, current market trends, competitive information and retailer input within the assortments and communicate changes to cross-functional resources promptly.

  • Build and develop good working relationships with vendors and define key vendor partners.

  • Participate in Vendor and Product Assortment planning including line reviews.

  • Negotiate pricing and programs with vendors.

  • Manage Vendor program funds and ensure revenue goals are met. Program funds include coop advertising, Partnership, Rebates, allowances, market revenue and markdown funds.

  • Support advertising / promotion strategy by negotiating special pricing for the products selected.

  • Attend National shows, as needed, to meet with new and existing vendors to review programs and gain new ideas.

  • Work with vendors regarding show attendance and the negotiation of show specials, special circular pricing and dating terms.

  • Working in conjunction with Vendors and Inventory Management department to provide forecasts on all new items, deals and plans for shows and special promotions, issues that may arise regarding pricing issues and mis-shipped merchandise. Follow-up on out of stock and late merchandise as requested by replenishment with the vendors to ensure product is inbound and expedited if necessary.

  • Review aged inventory reports and work with Inventory Management department to dispose of overstocked merchandise. Follow the Runout Policy for effectively handling non go-forward merchandise.

  • Maintain computer data on-line via the Vendor Portal and Epicor: ensure correct item descriptions, pricing, packs, weights, retails, gross margins, vendor and SKU. Inputs corrections on-line in the Vendor Portal. Perform on-line maintenance for circulars, etc.

  • Answer dealer phone calls and follow up in a timely manner. Research requests for product, vendor numbers, catalogs, and price checks. Resolve dealer and vendor concern.

  • Manage and maintain the gross margin for United Hardware to ensure Revenue goals are met.

  • Meet with Director of Merchandising regularly to review and provide input on department projects and goals.

  • Work with Category and Brand Marketing to manage Dealer Advisory Committee meetings.

  • Work with vendors, sales department and/or dealers to reduce excess inventory and eliminate close out Inventory from warehouse.

  • Develop and train employees on our computer system, on-line capabilities, daily report reading, daily maintenance, buying philosophy, etc.

  • Give timely and meaningful annual reviews to direct reports and, if applicable, review annual reviews of all associates that are given by direct reports.

  • Motivate and contribute to the professional development of subordinates.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Bachelors Degree in Business Administration or similar field, or equivalent education or experience

  • Ten years progressively complex experience in buying roles and assignments in the wholesale or retail hardware industry, including a minimum four years supervising and managing staff

  • Knowledge of Company products, services and systems

  • Strong written, verbal, analytical, negotiating and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work, and to meet deadlines

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
