Description
Hennepin County's Transportation Operations department is seeking an Engineering Technician or Assistant Engineering Technician to work in the Asset Management division – Roadway Data group. Engineering Technicians participate in developing, operating, and maintaining a safe and effective highway system throughout Hennepin County.

For more information visit the employee referral program page.Location and hours:This position is hybrid and will be performed both onsite at the Public Works Facility at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota 55340, in the field, and remote as job duties require. There is no public transportation to this facility. The ability to travel around Hennepin County to conduct field work and attend meetings is required. Work hours are Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. with limited flexibility. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022, to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

In this position, you will:
· For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I):
o Complete condition inspection surveys for a variety of roadway assets including medians, curbs, culverts, and catch basins.
o Run a variety of quality checks (spatial and non-spatial) on a frequent basis to ensure data fields are populated.
o Collect GPS and photos of new and modified assets including signals, signs, pedestrian ramps, catch basins, medians, and others.
o Review various data tables for long periods of time while in an office/remote environment.
o Utilize the ArcGIS desktop software for mapping and quality control tasks.
o Ensure GIS files are consistent with the asset management system by adding and updating data.
o Assist with training interns by providing instructions on protocols/guidelines for field collection, field inspections, and use of asset management software/data management protocols.
o Assist field staff/technicians by providing support for proper asset management data documentation.
o Communicate the status of data collection, data post processing, condition inspections, maintenance activities, plan set information and document unusual assets in the field.
o Support various asset management tasks by creating information guidelines for field crews, printing reports, properly documenting maintenance information, organizing digital files and creating a variety of workflow charts.
o Perform other duties including meeting software end users in the field to provide assistance and printing maps or guidelines for other groups.
· For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II - including the above duties):
o Work independently at a higher level completing more complex aspects of all duties listed above, specifically:
§ Run a variety of quality checks (spatial and non-spatial) on a frequent basis to ensure data fields are populated, including utilizing the ArcGIS software.
§ Review various data tables for long periods of time while in an office/remote environment.
Need to have:
· For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I):
o One of the following:
§ One year or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, or related engineering work.
§ One year or more of experience analyzing numerical data using computer software applications, or developing and maintaining computerized information systems/applications.
§ 30 college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science, or engineering-related technical courses.
§ Completion of an approved land surveying or highway/civil engineering technology training program.
· A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Need to have:
· For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II):
o One of the following:
§ Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
§ Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field.
§ Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2.
· A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Nice to have:
· Experience:
o Using Adobe Acrobat, ArcGIS Desktop, Microsoft Office, Trimble/TerraSync and/or Trimble Pathfinder Office, and ESRI Field Maps.
o Troubleshooting basic computer issues over the phone and in-person.
o Working with data management software.
o Collecting data in an outdoor environment and processing the data for decision making purposes.
· Knowledge of:
o Basic math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
o The Public Works transportation industry or an interest in understanding it.
o Data management practices.
· Reliable internet connection to complete work tasks through a VPN connection.
