Description

Hennepin County’s Elections department is seeking to fill several temporary Elections Assistant positions to administer in-person absentee/early voting through the 2026 General Election. These positions will be a part of the support staff group that will assist with absentee/early voting and will consist of a mix of data entry, customer service, and other clerical duties as assigned to support program areas throughout the Elections department. Elections Assistants must perform duties in a non-partisan manner and be able to provide excellent customer service, use technical and analytical skills, and perform a variety of clerical and administrative functions. The Elections department is looking for individuals who are interested in election administration, government processes, and interaction with residents. Candidates bilingual in English and Somali, Spanish, Oromo, Hmong, American, or Universal Sign Language are encouraged to apply. Bilingual candidates who pass a language assessment may qualify for additional bilingual duties and pay.

Location and hours:

These positions are performed onsite at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 South Sixth Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and are subject to change based on business need. Occasional evening and weekend hours will be required. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.  


About the position type:

These are limited duration (temporary) full-time, benefit earning positions. These positions will start May 17, 2026, with an expected end date of January 15, 2027.These positions are internally classified as Office Specialist III.

In these positions you will:

·       Perform data entry of absentee ballot applications/early voting certificates for in-person voters.

·       Review returned absentee ballot envelopes to ensure they meet all the legal requirements for being processed and counted.

·       Perform quality control checks.

·       Answer questions from voters on basic election information and procedures.

·       Perform post-election tasks including election day registration data entry and election day materials return and retention.

·       Support department program areas as needed.

 

Need to have:

One of the following:

·       Two or more years of office clerical experience.

·       Completion of two or more years of post-high school education.

·       An approved combination of education (3 semester credits = 1 month) and experience to equal two years or more.

·       18 months or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program.

·       One year or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Human Services Pathway Training program.


Nice to have:

·       Experience: 

o   Using the Statewide Voter Registration System.

o   Performing data entry from paper and/or electronic documents into a computer system.

o   Providing in-person customer service.

o   Working with Microsoft Office applications. 

·       Ability to: 

o   Follow instructions completely and accurately.

o   Work in accordance with Minnesota statutes and rules.

o   Understand basic elections policy and procedures. 

o   Demonstrate teamwork skills working with diverse groups of people.

o   Work in a non-partisan manner at all times.

o   Work independently and meet daily deadlines.

o   Provide excellent customer service.

o   Use problem solving techniques to complete daily work.

·       Knowledge of:

o   Basic policies and procedures related to elections. 

o   Using different computerized systems/databases. 

Candidates with fluency in another language in addition to English are encouraged to apply. Bilingual candidates who pass a language assessment may qualify for additional bilingual pay and duties.
