Description
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) is seeking a Communications Coordinator to serve as a Public Information Officer (PIO) to craft messages related to a variety of communication platforms, lead communication strategy initiatives, and provide public relations support. This position will also work collaboratively with other members of the Sheriff’s Office and Hennepin County communications teams and report directly to the Communications Director.
This position performs comprehensive communications work of considerable complexity, performs at a high level of strategic planning, and requires significant independent decision-making.

Location and hours:
This position will be on-site in downtown Minneapolis located at 350 South 5th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55415. The primary work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and will include occasional evenings, holidays and/or weekends. Candidate must be able to take part in an on-call rotation that covers 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, and 365 days/year. Note: This position will be responsible for monitoring and responding to media inquiries outside of regular business hours. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.
About the position type:
This is a full-time, limited duration (temporary), benefit-earning position expected to last up to two years, with the possibility of extension.

In this position, you will:
• Provide strategic communication and public relations support; generate ideas and help determine the best communication strategy and solution.
• Develop and implement communication plans; evaluate communication plan results and make recommendations for future efforts.
• Collaborate with subject matter experts to produce media releases, craft social media communication, and develop key messages for various topics; ensure communication is in accordance with county policy guidelines.
• Serve as a Public Information Officer (PIO) and produce a variety of public information/communication messages.
• Identify gaps in communications, develop/recommend strategies, implement solutions, and present results to management.
• Ensure consistency in messaging and branding that is used in all communications.
• Assist with and provide support for presentations, public meetings, and media interviews, including writing talking points for a variety of events.
• Provide communication assistance during emergencies; collaborate with other agencies on local, statewide, regional, and national emergencies.
Need to have:
• One of the following:
o Eight or more years of experience in general administrative work relating to the management of departmental/organizational operations or in a specialty area appropriate to the position.
o Bachelor's degree in public administration, business administration, or other field appropriate to the position and four years or more of experience in general administrative work relating to the management of departmental/organizational operations or in a specialty area appropriate to the position.
o Note: General administrative work is defined as the administration and/or management of programs, policies, and/or budgets.
• Access to reliable transportation to travel to worksites throughout Hennepin County.
Nice to have:
• Two years or more of professional experience with emphasis on writing.
• Experience:
o Working in news media or public relations.
o Working as a Public Information Officer for a public safety agency.
o With public speaking/presenting.
o Managing content on social media sites.
o Facilitating news conferences.
o Writing and/or preparing reports.
• Knowledge of:
o Principles, ethics, and practices of journalism and public relations.
o Structure and content of the English language.
o Rules and guidelines related to branding.
o Principles of project management.
• Ability to:
o Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; plan and carry out effective internal and external information programs with limited supervision.
o Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
o Handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
o Build relationships and serve as a liaison on behalf of the county; negotiate with others; persuade others.
o Lead projects or work on teams; pay attention to details; assess needs of clients; actively problem solve; enforce brand standards and writing guidelines; summarize large amounts of complex information.
