Description

Fleet Services within Hennepin County's Transportation Operations department is looking for an energetic, highly motivated, and team-oriented Junior Equipment Mechanic to join our team. This position will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and performing diagnostics on a variety of equipment to include: hybrid, electric, gas cars and pickups, medium and heavy-duty gas or diesel trucks. Construction equipment including loaders, graders and skid steers, trailers, small engines, and powersport equipment.

Location and hours: This position is located at the Public Works Facility, at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota 55340. There is no public transportation to this facility. This is a second shift position, with work hours being 2:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday. This position requires candidates to be available for on call duty after hours, weekends, and holidays.

The base hourly wage is $29.28 per hour. In addition to the base wage, there is a $.35/hour for a class A driver's license, $2.00/hour for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) master's in automotive or heavy truck, and $1.00 for the night shift differential pay.  

In this position, you will: 

·       Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical defects in light and heavy duty vehicles, off road equipment, and various other related equipment with gasoline and diesel engines.

·       Repair or replace large components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, and hydraulic pumps.

·       Perform wheel end service on light and heavy duty vehicles including but not limited to brakes, seals, axles, and wheel bearings.

·       Perform preventative maintenance and repair on snow emergency vehicles and equipment.

·       Perform preventative maintenance (PM's) on all equipment.

·       Maintain records of repairs by recording them in M5 fleet software.

·       Drive and operate vehicles for the purpose of testing them and transporting them to and from service sites.

Need to have:

·       One of the following:

o   Completion of an approved two-year program or higher in automobile or truck mechanics from an accredited technical school and one or more years of experience servicing automotive equipment. 

o   Three or more years of experience servicing automotive equipment. 

·       A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit within six months of employment.

·       A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) withairbrake and tanker endorsements OR the ability to obtain within 6 months.

·       Ability to: 

o   Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.

o   Supply own full complement of mechanic tools.

Nice to have:

·       Valid Class A driver's license with airbrake and tanker endorsements.

·       Commercial vehicle inspector's license.

·       Experience:

o   Repairing vehicles/equipment such as class 7 or 8 trucks, medium duty trucks, light duty trucks and automobiles, heavy duty construction equipment, light duty construction equipment, snowmobiles, boats, and small engine equipment.

o   In diesel mechanic work.

o   Entering vehicle repair data into a computer.

·       Knowledge of:

o   Proper use of all automotive tools and equipment.

o   Procedures of automotive mechanic work.

o   The principles and mechanics of internal combustion engines and ECM and related sensors and diesel and gas fuel injection systems.

o   Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

·       Ability to:

o   Work from diagrams, manuals, and verbal and written directions.

o   Make minor repairs using oxyacetylene torches and arc welders.
