Description
The Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCCR) is seeking an entry-level accountant. This role requires prior accounting experience, including proficiency in preparing Excel spreadsheets. Ideal candidates are passionate about solving accounting problems, supporting their team, performing account reconciliations, and serving a diverse range of internal and external customers. Additionally, this position involves supervising a small team.

Candidates must possess solid knowledge of accounting theory, including debits, credits, chart of accounts, and the impact of journal entries on financial statements. An oral accounting assessment will be conducted during the first interview.

Location and hours:
This position will be performed on-site at the Hennepin County Adult Correctional Facility at 1145 Shenandoah Lane, Plymouth, MN 55447. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, with flexible hours between 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Note that a hybrid option may be considered after the probation certification period.
New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position, you will:
• Perform routine journal entries, account receivables, account payables, and check deposits/coding/requesting in according to standardized governmental methods and procedures.
• Update receivables/refunds against a clients account.
• Perform monthly reviews and reconcile general ledger accounts and transactions.
• Perform ad hoc reporting, may assist with internal/external audit requests and year end tasks for DOCCR.
• Perform monthly reconciliation, authorization and documentation of employees’ expenses and purchases are within county policy.
• Collaborate with the DOCCR finance team and other Hennepin County departments.
• Assist the program finance leads as requested.
Need to have:
• Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, business administration with an emphasis in accounting, or other specialty area related to the position.
• Note: position-related professional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Nice to have:
• Knowledge of:
o Basic accounting theory.
o Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Experience:
o Working two or more years as a professional accountant.
o In governmental accounting.
o Using PeopleSoft Financials or other accounting systems.
o Operating Microsoft Excel by using specific functions/applications such as graphs and charts, pivot tables, and V lookup.
o With journal entries, accounting entries, and account receivable/billing/payment application adjustments, annual audit, account reconciliations, purchasing, and year-end financial tasks.
o In customer service.
• Ability to:
o Handle multiple priorities with minimal direction.
o Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, along with critical thinking.
o Communicate well both verbally and in writing.
o Establish and maintain working relationships with internal and external customers/partners.
o Meet deadlines and produce accurate work in a fast-paced office environment.
