Description
We're hiring a Survey Crew Member - Assistant Engineering Technician or Engineering Technician (depending on the candidate's qualifications) for the Surveyor's Office that will work on projects in the field such as boundary surveys, maintenance of Public Land corners and In-Place Right-of-Way surveys. This position will require use of and proficiency with basic surveying instrumentation. The Hennepin County Surveyor's Office maintains and preserves the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) throughout Hennepin County. The office also provides surveying services for the county including the Department of Transportation, Examiner of Titles, Regional Railroad Authority, Property Services and Tax Forfeited Lands.

Salary based upon qualifications: Engineering Technician, Assistant (Level I): $50,101.44 - $69,273.22 Annually Engineering Technician (Level II): $60,284.85 - $84,202.03 Annually
Location and hours:
This position will be performed at a post of duty and in a field environment within Hennepin County. Post of duty will be located at the Hennepin County Public Works facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340. There is no public transportation to this facility. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Work hours may change during the year as seasons change. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position, you will:
· For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I):
o Research public records and assist in maintaining records of Public Land Survey corners.
o Analyze field data and operate computer equipment.
· For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II, includes the above duties):
o Direct and check the work of technicians in lower-level job classes.
Need to have:
· For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I):
· One of the following:
o Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology or land surveying training program.
o Thirty (30) or more college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science, or engineering related technical courses.
o One year or more years of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
o One year or more years of experience analyzing numerical data using computer software applications or developing and maintaining computerized information system applications.
· A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
· For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II):
· One of the following:
o Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
o Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field.
o Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2.
· A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
Nice to have:
· Experience:
o Working as a Survey Crew member.
o Working with the Public Land Survey System.
o Using computer software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, and Adobe Acrobat.
o Using Leica, Trimble, or similar survey equipment such as GPS units, Total Stations, controllers/data collectors, etc.
· Knowledge of:
o Public records research relating to property.
o Math functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; and the ability to apply math functions to survey and mapping solutions.
o CAD software programs; and the ability to sync with surveying field equipment to download/upload data and to perform routine and complex survey calculations and analysis.
· Effective verbal and written communication skills.
· Ability to:
o Schedule, prioritize, and balance several tasks/projects.
o Work independently and in teams with minimal lead worker direction.
o Demonstrate the employee competencies.
