Description

Hennepin County Public Works is seeking a Computer-Aided Drafting and Design (CADD)-focused Engineering Technician to join the Design division within the Transportation Project Delivery department. This role is ideal for candidates who enjoy roadway design, geometric layout development, and producing high-quality construction plan sets using OpenRoads Designer as their primary tool.

You will collaborate with engineers, project managers, and technicians to deliver roadway reconstruction projects and will have opportunities for professional and technical growth through training and hands-on design experience.

Location and hours:


This position is hybrid and will be performed both onsite at the Hennepin County Public Works Facility at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota 55340, and remote as job duties require. There is no public transportation to this facility. Work hours are flexible between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In this position, you will:

  • Perform advanced CADD work using OpenRoads Designer as your primary design/drafting platform.

  • Create complete construction plan sets, including complex geometric layouts, typical sections, roadway details, and design sheets.

  • Develop and verify roadway geometrics, earthwork volumes, quantities, and cost estimates.

  • Use tools such as AutoTURN to analyze vehicle movements and ensure design feasibility and safety.

  • Maintain plan files, models, standards, and design documentation for project tracking and quality control.

  • Support design guideline development and continuously improve CADD workflows aligned with MnDOT standards and other regulatory agencies.

  • Assist in providing direction, training, and quality control for other technicians and team members with CADD procedures, plan preparation, and quality checks.

  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure project goals and timelines are met.



Need to have:

  • One of the following:

    • Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.

    • Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field.

    • Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2.

  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.



Nice to have:

  • Experience:

    • Producing roadway plans using OpenRoads Designer, InRoads, Geopak, or Civil 3D.

    • Preparing roadway plan sheets from preliminary design through final plans (title sheets, layouts, construction sheets, removals, standard sheets), while ensuring accuracy, consistency, and adherence to project specifications.

    • Computing construction quantities using MnDOT’s Transport List bid items, including estimating quantities through methods such as area/volume calculations, linear measurements, material takeoffs, and tabulation based on project plan geometry.

    • Leading or coordinating work teams and collaborating across disciplines.

    • Interpreting MnDOT Standard Design Manuals, Technical Memoranda, construction plans, and specifications.

  • Ability to:

    • Apply critical thinking and sound judgement within established guidelines.

    • Manage multiple tasks and prioritize work effectively under minimal supervision.

    • Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

    • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
