Description
The Asset Management division of Hennepin County's Transportation Operation department is seeking an Engineering Technician or Assistant Engineering Technician to work as part of a team to deliver maintenance projects with opportunities for technical growth through training and working with other experienced professionals. This role encompasses a blend of fieldwork and office-based tasks. You’ll be conducting thorough inspections of drainage structures and pavement conditions. Additionally, your duties will focus on plan production and data input.
• Engineering Technician, Assistant (Level I): $46,330.04 - $60,561.98 Annually
• Engineering Technician (Level II): $58,516.84 - $69,767.50 Annually

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340 (there is no public transportation to the facility), in a field environment within Hennepin County and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, with flexible hours between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In these positions, you will:
• For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I):
o Read and interpret construction plans and technical specifications.
o Observe construction activities for compliance to the project plans and specifications.
o Assist in asset inspection, data collection and documentation in the field.
o Assist in the preparation of plan development and check item quantities.
• For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II - including the above duties):
o Read, interpret and understand construction plans and technical specifications.
o Observe construction activities for compliance to the project plans and specifications.
o Assist in asset inspection, data collection and documentation in the field.
o Prepare plan sheets and verify item quantities.
o Conduct inspections for culverts, curb, and pavement by collecting field data and documenting in ArcGIS, ICON (Infrastructure Consultant) and ATOM (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
o May direct, train, and check the work of technicians in lower-level classifications.
Need to have:
• For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I)
o One of the following:
Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology or land surveying training program.
One or more years of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
One year of experience analyzing numerical data using computer software applications, or developing and maintaining computerized information system applications.
Thirty (30) college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science, or engineering related technical courses.
• A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
• Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.
• For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II)
o One of the following:
Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field.
Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2.
• A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
• Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Nice to have:
• Certification(s) from the MnDOT Technical Certification Program.
• Experience:
o Utilizing computer software, such as CAD (OpenRoads, InRoads, Geopak, Civil 3D or equivalent), GIS, spreadsheets, or databases
o Engineering design, survey, permitting processes, and inspection work.
o Using terrain surface and/or roadway geometric design using roadway design software.
• Knowledge of:
o Math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
o Construction equipment, materials, and methods.
• Ability to:
o Communicate with staff at all levels of the organization.
o Read and understand MnDot standard design manuals and technical memos, construction plans, specifications and other civil engineering job-related forms.
o Schedule, prioritize, and balance several tasks/projects.
