Description
Hennepin County's Transportation Project Delivery department is seeking a materials lab intern to join the Public Works Materials Lab to assist with daily laboratory operations and support tasks. This will be a hands-on role that includes both field and office responsibilities. Location and hours:
This internship is hybrid and will be performed both onsite at the Hennepin County Public Works facility, 1600 Prairie Drive in Medina, MN and remote as job duties require. There is no public transportation to this facility. Interns are scheduled to work 5-10 hours per week during the school year, with the opportunity to work up to 40 hours when school is not in session. This internship is intended to start in August 2025 and last up to two years in duration. The work schedule will be Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some flexibility.
While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

In this position, you will:
· Assist with routine laboratory testing and material analysis.
· Perform data entry and maintain accurate lab records.
· Support lab personnel with general tasks and equipment organization.
· Deliver construction materials and samples to various job sites through the county.
· Maintain a safe and orderly work environment.
Need to have:
· One of the following:
o Current enrollment in a vocational/technical, associate or bachelor's degree program in construction management, civil engineering, engineering technology, highway engineering, land surveying, urban planning, or a related field.
o Recent graduate (within 6 months) in a vocational/technical, associate or bachelor's degree program in construction management, civil engineering, engineering technology, highway engineering, land surveying, urban planning, or a related field.
· A valid driver's license, access to reliable transportation, and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver’s permit.
· Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
· Ability to walk on uneven terrain, bend and stoop, and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
· Access to reliable internet and a hybrid office space.
Nice to have:
· Experience:
o Troubleshooting basic computer issues.
o With ArcGIS, Adobe Acrobat, or Adobe.
o With Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, Word).
· Knowledge of math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, or geometry.
· Ability to:
o Communicate with staff at all levels of the organization, in-person, or virtually (Teams, email, and phones)
o Demonstrate basic computer and data entry skills.
o Demonstrate effective attention to detail and willingness to learn.
o Work independently and as part of a team.
