JOB TITLE: Physician Assistant - Certified
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Physician Assistant functions as a mid-level health care provider, responsible for providing Urologic health care to individuals, groups and community, evaluating health problems, instituting therapy in collaboration with the primary urologist and/or referring for other care.
Physician Assistant services include:
Acute Care/Surgical Assist Physician Assistant (hospital-based)
Urologic Clinic Physician Assistant (clinic-based)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Knowledge of adult Urologic health and related diagnostic and treatment modalities.
Skill in performing a complete history and physical examination and recognition of abnormal findings.
Uses an in-depth knowledge of pathophysiology and psycho sociology function as a resource to members of the health care team at affiliated hospitals and Metro Urology to facilitate patient care delivery.
Participates in activities that contribute to the education of other health care professionals, including education (presentations) and publishing.
Participates in medical and nursing research projects, including presenting and publishing findings.
Promotes and practices economical and effective health care delivery to patients and families serviced by Metro Urology.
Demonstrates behavior that models and supports Metro Urology service vision and philosophy.
Teaches and promotes practices to improve or maintain health to patients and family members and others within and outside Metro Urology.
Participates in or initiates activities necessary for annual reappointment and privileging with appropriate hospital systems.
Documents evidence of continuing competency in the areas of medical diagnosis, therapeutics and management, as well as required verifications of licensure/certification.
Participates in activities that enhance professional development with role as an advanced practice nurse, such as:
Serving on Metro Urology committees, interdisciplinary and nursing hospital and community groups as appropriate.
Reading professional journals and texts to maintain current on the latest clinical, professional and legislative trends, sharing the knowledge gained with other members of the health care team.
Attending continuing education programs.
Participating in professional organizations.
Acute Care Physician Assistant:
Function: The Acute Care Physician Assistant (ACPA) is a mid-level provider and functions as a member of the Metro Urology medical care management team in the acute care setting. The ACPA participates in the diagnosis of Urologic disease, plans and implements intervention and evaluates patient responses under the direction of and incident to the Metro Urology physicians and will provide services such as, but not limited to:
Providing case management for the inpatient population.
Ordering medical consultations, therapies and interventions, including, but not limited to medications, diagnostic tests, fluid and electrolyte support, nutrition and blood and blood products.
Providing information and support to families. Facilitating communication between patient and family members of the health care team.
Collaborating with the nurse managers to implement and evaluate holistic patient care delivery within the hospital setting.
REGULATION OF PRACTICE AND ACCOUNTABLITITY:
The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice regulates the practice of the Physician Assistant. Physicians Assistants at Metro Urology may collaboratively practice according to their own expertise, state licensure and Metro Urology policy and Practice Agreement. The Physician Assistant is responsible to the patients and families for quality of care rendered. This includes accountability to patients for standard of practice and making appropriate clinical decisions. Physician Assistants are accountable to the Executive Director and the physicians.
Qualifications/Education/Licensure:
Licensure as a Physicians Assistant in the state of Minnesota.
Recognition as a Physician Assistant by the state of Minnesota.
Certification by the NCCPA Credentialing Center or recognized national board as a Physicians Assistant.
Masters degree preferred.
Maintains BLS certification.
ACLS encouraged.
Minnesota prescriptive authority and DEA licensure.
Minimum of at least two years of CCU, ICU, Hospital or clinic based work as a Physicians Assistant.
Additional experience per individual role.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Requires full range of body motion, frequent standing, walking and sitting for extended periods of time. Requires visual and hearing acuity. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds and drive a car.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Involves exposure to communicable disease, medical preparations, toxic substances and other conditions common to clinic and hospital environments.
