Description
Hennepin County's Outreach & Community Supports department is seeking three Community Engagement Specialists to support and advance internal and external community engagement, with a focus on creating equity and access to county services and resources by ensuring that barriers to participation are removed for communities most impacted by systemic racism, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, language, disability and sexual orientation/identity.
We are seeking candidates who have lived experiences and/or knowledge working in the following communities: African American, American Indian/Native American/Indigenous and Somali.

Location and hours:These positions are hybrid and will be performed at various community locations throughout Hennepin County, including the Hennepin County Government Center at 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487 and remote as job duties require. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., and will require flexibility to attend community meetings and events. These positions require some travel throughout Hennepin County. While these positions are designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.
New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022, to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment. In these positions, you will:
· Consult, collaborate, and create engagement plans to support initiatives including Hennepin County’s Land and Water Acknowledgement and Opioid initiatives with priority populations, specifically American Indian/Native American/Indigenous, African American, and Somali communities.
· Serve as a cultural liaison between the communities you serve and be a builder of relationships between Hennepin County and communities to bridge gaps, build trust, and create empowerment with priority populations.
· Lead collaboration between internal departments within Hennepin County to better serve residents who have been impacted the most by disparities.
· Build and maintain long-term, sustainable relationships with community members and organizations.
· Assist with a wide range of engagement events, including attending community meetings, tabling, door knocking, facilitating listening sessions, and conducting surveys.
· Educate and provide support to residents regarding services and resources available; serve as a contact for residents seeking to connect with Hennepin County and its services.
· Serve on countywide and community committees and task forces and provide support for social media and other communications needs.
Need to have:
· One of the following:
o Eight or more years of general administrative work relating to the management of departmental/organizational operations or experience in community engagement, environmental education, community/public relations, or environmental justice.
o Bachelor's degree or higher in business administration, communications, public administration, public relations, urban studies or other field appropriate to the position and four years or more of general administrative work relating to the management of departmental/organizational operations or experience in community engagement, environmental education, community/public relations, or environmental justice.
Nice to have:
· One or more years of experience working in engagement with African American, American Indian/Native American/Indigenous or Somali communities in Hennepin County.
· Experience:
o Leading the development, implementation, and maintenance of trusted relationships with community members and organizations.
o Facilitating and leading organization-wide or community committees/sessions.
o Communicating with community members in verbal, written, and public speaking formats.
o With diversity, equity and inclusion.
· Ability to:
o Navigate challenging conversations among diverse populations and build consensus.
o Establish and maintain relationships with community members and organizations as well as across internal lines of business.
o Collaborate and work across multiple communities and leadership levels within the community.
o Communicate effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, neurodiverse, differing ability, gender, socioeconomic, and sexual orientation backgrounds.
o Coordinate multiple projects and organize work to meet deadlines and conflicting priorities.
