Description
Think beyond the desk with your education in real estate, finance, or economics. The Hennepin County Assessor's Office is seeking to fill multiple appraisal internship opportunities. Interns will work with appraisers in the field collecting data for property tax valuation purposes and other appraisal related tasks. Appraisal experience is not required. Hands-on and field training will be provided.

Location and hours:
These positions are hybrid and will be performed both on-site at various sites throughout suburban Hennepin County, and remote as job duties require. These are full-time, summer internships working daytime hours, Monday through Friday. These internships will start in May 2025 and end in August 2025 with the potential to extend on a case-by-case basis. These internships will require traveling to different sites throughout suburban Hennepin County. Interns receive mileage and parking reimbursement for business-related travel. While these positions are designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In these positions, you will:
For hire as a residential appraiser intern:
The proposed work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. with flexibility. The preferred candidate will be able to work effectively with the public, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, take physical measurements of real property using measuring tools, read and understand real estate descriptions, (e.g. plots, maps, blueprints). The residential intern will be responsible for the following tasks:
· Travel with their own vehicle to inspect residential properties under general supervision.
· Inspect and conduct mass residential appraisals by reviewing physical characteristics of residential properties (single family homes, townhomes, duplex’s, zero lot line, and/or condos).
· Verify characteristics on various cities from field cards and sketches by completing door to door inspections, reviewing surveys or completing virtual inspections using aerials and sales data.
· Evaluate and classify residential structures based on construction qualities, and complete digital sketches of structures.
· Respond to taxpayers' questions and inquiries regarding valuation and our process for setting values.
For hire as a commercial appraiser intern:
The proposed work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with flexibility. The preferred candidate will be able to engage effectively with the public in-person, verbally and in writing, take physical measurements of real property using measuring tools, and read and understand real estate descriptions, (e.g. plots, maps, blueprints). The commercial intern will be responsible for the following tasks:
· Travel with their own vehicle to inspect commercial properties under general supervision.
· Complete door to door inspections. Inspections include speaking with the taxpayer, reviewing physical characteristics from our field card, verifying measurements from sketches, and taking photos.
· Evaluate and classify commercial structures based on construction qualities, and complete digital sketches of structures as needed.
· Respond to taxpayers' questions and inquiries regarding valuation and our process for setting values.
Need to have:
· Currently enrolled om, or recently graduated from (within 6 months), an associate, bachelor's or master's degree program in real estate, finance, economics, architectural drafting, business or another related field.
· A valid driver's license and access to reliable and consistent transportation for travel to various locations throughout Hennepin County.
· Ability to make physical measurements of real property using a tape or other distance measuring tool; walk on uneven terrain; climb stairs; bend, stoop, and maneuver through narrow areas in order to view physical or structural features of a property; read and understand real estate descriptions, plots, maps, blueprints; create scale and digital drawings of property and calculate areas.
Nice to have:
· Experience with:
o Microsoft Office programs or equivalent Google products.
o Apex Sketch, Auto CAD or similar sketching programs.
o Residential or commercial real estate.
· Knowledge of:
o Building construction materials.
o Real estate terminology.
o Types and methods of appraisals.
· Strong communication and organization skills.
· Strong customer service skills.
