Description
Hennepin County Library (HCL) is seeking teens ages 16-18 to join the STEAM Squad. STEAM Squad teen interns design and deliver programs for kids and teens at the library that foster creative expression and exploration of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) in a fun and relaxed learning environment. These positions are limited duration, non-benefit earning internships. These positions are internally classified as an Intern I. Click here to view the job classification specification.
Location and hours:
STEAM Squad teen interns average approximately 24 hours per month while working a schedule that includes evenings and weekends. These positions involve working onsite indoors and outdoors. These positions will include indoor in-person work on site as the library continues to adapt its services. Visit hclib.org to learn more about library services.
Current vacancies include:
· Brookdale Library (6125 Shingle Creek Parkway, Brooklyn Center, MN 554430): Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
· Brooklyn Park Library (8500 W Broadway Avenue, Brooklyn Park, MN 55445): Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 p.m– 5:45 p.m., and every other Friday from 3:45 p.m- 5 p.m.
· Cedar-Riverside Opportunity Center (505 S 15th Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55454): Tuesdays and Thursdays 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. during school year, and Tuesdays 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. and Thursdays 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the summer.
· Franklin Library (1314 E Franklin Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55404): Wednesdays 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. and Sundays 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
· North Regional Library (1315 Lowry Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN 55411): Thursdays 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. and Saturdays 12p.m. - 4 p.m.
· Roosevelt Library (4026 S 28th Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55406): Mondays 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m., Fridays 3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m., and every other Saturday 12 p.m. - 4 p.m.
In these positions, you will:
· Guide kids and teens through hands-on workshops and learning activities focused on STEAM.
· Research and develop new STEAM activities based on personal and community interests.
· Work with other STEAM Squad teen interns to develop, lead, demonstrate, trouble-shoot, and instruct others in the creation of STEAM projects.
· Set up before and clean up after programs.
· Foster a safe and open environment for kids and teens to create and share.
· Learn techniques and tools for teaching, presenting, and facilitating hands-on learning activities for different age groups.
· Learn methods to support creative expression and collaboration among kids and teens.
· Participate in scheduled training for skill-building, team growth, and personal growth.
Need to be:
· Enrolled in high school in September of 2025 and expecting to graduate in 2026 or later.
· Between the ages of 16 and 18.
· Able to access reliable transportation to the work location for your squad.
· Able to lift up to 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
Nice to have:
· Experience:
