The Hennepin County Attorney's Office's (HCAO) Civil Division is seeking to fill a Real Estate and Tax Specialist III position. The Civil Division provides a full range of legal services to Hennepin County government, working on contracts, employment issues, torts, health services, real property, and human services. The division also represents the elected Hennepin County Board and Sheriff, as well as the county administrator.
Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Hennepin County Government Center at 300 S. 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487 and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, with typical hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While this position is hybrid, based on current requirements hires must live in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.
In this position, you will:
Calculate tax variations, credits, differences, and use advanced mathematical practices to solve abnormal taxation concern.
Prepare prior-year tax adjustments and change forms using the aforementioned calculations to change Hennepin County tax information.
Create and prepare legal paperwork related to tax cases and furnish them to internal and opposing attorneys.
Assist with admitting service of property tax petitions on behalf of the HCAO.
Coordinate work with the Taxpayer Services Department (TSD) and the Assessor's office.
Track tax caseload and case dispositions; update case information including the court calendar, and informing all interested parties including the tax court of any changes in status to the cases.
Produce reports for school districts and assessors informing the various departments of all tax petitions filed.
Input, retrieve, update, and delete stored information in computerized tax tracking systems.
Perform quality control when processing orders and tax court documents.
Perform clerical duties related to taxation and the calculations associated with this position.
Oversee, manage, and/or coordinate the tax petition process from service of petition to refund.
Need to have:
One of the following:
Three years or more of clerical experience processing and maintaining financial and/or legal documents.
33 months or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program.
Note: Business or other related education may be substituted for experience on a semester basis
Nice to have:
Certification in tax calculation by the Minnesota Department of Revenue.
Experience with TAXSYS and CLSS mainframe system, Microsoft Office products including Outlook.
Meticulous mathematical and technical expertise.
Organizational skills and the ability to utilize these skills daily in providing excellent customer service.
Ability to:
Understand how assessors operate including the petition process.
Stay current on changes in statutes explaining tax calculations, code procedures, special property tax breaks, and how tax money is allocated.
