This position will have the flexibility to telecommute, work a hybrid schedule, or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to complete a telework agreement. The incumbent will be expected to work in the office once a month for team building and on occasion when needed.
As a Research Scientist 3 (Chief Toxicologist), you will serve as the primary source of expertise in the fields of chemistry and toxicology for the Department to assess human health and ecological hazards so that exposure by the Department to regulatory actions or liability resulting from these hazards in infrastructure projects is minimized. In addition, this position will:
· Provide technical leadership and expertise for all Department toxicological and environmental hazard assessments and recommendations so that Department personnel are informed of regulations, while ensuring the recommendations are scientifically defensible and can be realistically implemented.
· Serve as the Department expert regarding toxicological matters by acquiring and assimilating emerging environmental research information so that the department becomes a trusted source of scientific information and practices to prevent the toxicological effects of discharges and emissions from transportation systems.
· Interact with citizens, other agency personnel, private business, and special interest stakeholders to understand their environmental concerns with transportation systems and explain the Department’s position on the same.
· Lead technical toxicological data collection for the Office of Environmental Stewardship so that studies and hazard evaluations are performed to provide clear and concise conclusions for decision makers with recommendations that are technically defensible.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
3 years of advanced professional experience in toxicology, chemistry, or other closely related fields.
NOTE: Master's degree in toxicology, chemistry, or closely related field will substitute for 6 months of work experience.
NOTE: PhD in any of the above fields will substitute for one year of work experience.
And 3 years of advanced professional experience must demonstrate the following:
Data and analysis experience with chemistry and/or toxicology.
Experience evaluating and giving recommendations on environmental/human health impacts.
Project management experience.
Written communication skills sufficient to develop quality letters, reports, and work products.
Oral communications skills sufficient to deliver presentations and provide training.
Human Relations skills sufficient to communicate effectively and diplomatically; and work cooperatively with individual and multi-disciplinary teams.
