Do you have one year or more of experience as a Peace Officer and have an active MN Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) license? Come join our team as a Deputy Sheriff with our Water Patrol Unit.
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Water Patrol Unit is responsible for all water-related incidents within the county. The unit fulfills the statutory duties of the Sheriff's Office on all waterways and actively patrols the 104 lakes and three rivers in the county. The unit also provides specialty services such as ice rescue, watercraft accident investigation, and an underwater recovery team. The unit has many specialized pieces of equipment including watercraft, air boats, snowmobiles, side scan and stationary sonar, underwater remote operated vehicles, and ATVs.
As a Sheriff's Deputy you will have the opportunity to expand your public safety experience through training, promotion, and opportunities for specialized law enforcement assignments. Location and hours:This position will be on-site at the Water Patrol office located at 4141 Shoreline Drive, Spring Park, MN 55384. This position requires working a flexible schedule including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and is subject to emergency call back 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
Based on current requirements, hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. About this position type:This is a full-time, benefit earning position. The anticipated start date is 03/11/24.

In this position, you will:
· Respond to emergency 911 calls for service.
· Assist in search and rescue operations and/or respond to public safety emergencies.
· Enforce traffic laws including the applicable laws governing water and snowmobile safety.
· Enforce mandated duties; search and rescue, buoying or marking, patrol, removal of hazards to navigation, inspection of rental watercraft and equipment, investigation of watercraft accidents, water related accidents, and drownings, regulate temporary structures, and recovery of drowned bodies.
· Develop good rapport with, work with, and handle shift commander duties for volunteer Special Deputies.
· Provide training to Special Deputies and other public safety agencies.
· Conduct public presentations on boat and water safety.
· Operate rescue, emergency, and specialized equipment.
· Make arrests, collect, and preserve evidence, and testify in court.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Need to have:
· Licensure or eligible to be licensed as a peace officer by hire date in the state of Minnesota by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
· A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
· The ability to work a flexible schedule including day, evening, overnight, on-call, holiday, and weekend hours.
· The ability and willingness to work in a position that may involve the possibility of physical confrontation.
· Possess no convictions of a felony or other criminal conviction as outlined in the MN POST Board rules.
· Pass each of the following exam components:
o Background investigation.
o Physical abilities test.
o Psychological evaluation.
o Medical examination.
o Drug screening.
o Firearms evaluation.
Nice to have:
· One year or more experience as a law enforcement officer in the field of outdoor recreation and/or natural resources enforcement.
· Be an experienced swimmer with ability to tread water for several minutes.
· Experience with operation of specialized equipment such as: boats, snowmobiles, drones, and sonar.
· Critical thinking skills.
· Attention to detail.
· Ability to:
o Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
o React quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
o Observe situations analytically and objectively and respond accordingly.
o Handle situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially.
o Use good judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
