Description
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Gun Permit Unit is hiring an Office Specialist, Principal. This unit is a part of the Investigative Bureau. The makeup of the unit consists of part-time and full-time civilian employees and one licensed supervisor (Sergeant). The Gun Permit Unit processes applications involving permit to purchase a firearm and permit to carry a pistol for residents of Hennepin County. On any given year there are 50,000+ permit holders in Hennepin County alone. Each permit issued is valid for up to five years.Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus. This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at Minneapolis City Hall, 350 South 5th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55415, and remote as job duties require. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.
New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022, toDecember 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.About the position type:This is a full-time, benefit earning position.This position is internally classified as an Office Specialist, Principal.Click here to view the job classification specification.Applicants with convictions are not automatically disqualified. Each case is considered on its individual circumstances and the type of work. In this position, you will:
· Process applications involving permit to carry a pistol and permit to purchase a firearm accurately and timely.
· Create electronic and physical case files for every application received.
· Print permits and prepare them to be sent in the mail.
· Maintain a daily, monthly, and annual spreadsheet involving gun permit data for the county; send spreadsheets to law enforcement, administration, and other agencies.
· Order office supplies and manage the receiving of office supplies orders.
· Communicate with members of the public.
Need to have:
· One of the following:
· Three or more years of office clerical experience.
· 30 months or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program.
· A combination of office clerical experience and post high school education, totaling 3 years or more (3 semester credits = 1 month).
Nice to have:
· Strong attention to detail, well organized, and able to handle multiple tasks, deadlines, and requests utilizing appropriate time management skills.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat DC, and Criminal History databases.
· Preparing, retrieving, and maintaining files.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills including preparing professional correspondence.
· Proofread numbers, correspondence, and other written materials for spelling, grammar, and format accuracy.
· Experience:
o Using an electronic record management system.
o Handling confidential and/or sensitive information.
o Providing customer service and responding to questions in-person, over the phone, and by email.
o Following written policies and procedures.
o Working in a law enforcement setting.
